Brant Baker Shekinah Fellowship "Re-Visited"

Brant Baker Shekinah Fellowship

Who is this Man? Why was his name erased from Church recent history?

Brant was a growing ministry operating with the gifts of healing in every service. I attended many of his services. A couple times he walked past me and I got a much closer look and I highly suspected he was probably gay. More info can be seen at http://z4.invisionfree.com/CrossLight_Ministrie/index.php?showtopic=1980 . I really loved his style of ministry and he always filled to capasity every place he ministered. He used a very large choir of young folk like himself. These would go out intothe crowds as he began healing people in Jesus Name and they also did the same out in the audience. There is completely no doubt people were healed and slain in the Spirit.

He really brought worshipinfg God and Jesus to a new level and Jesus presence wa so thick you could cut it with a knife. I remember that I could feel as he attempted to lay hands on someone he could get only to within 6 inches and out they'd go. I personally felt that limit and knew it was maxed out and the person would have to fall slain in the Spirit.

I knew that style of worship an annoiting would follow me. I moved North in 1980 and TBN was not on air yet here in Seattle and I did n ot get to see him as frequently. Then when TBN came to Seattle I noticed Brant was no longer on TBN. I caught a few words once as Paul Crouch stated to someone on air about a strange problem. paul hesitated as he spoke about some minister that had suddenly died and Paul did not mention his name. I wrote asking about Brant and was it him and did he die of aids as the hestitation to talk out right about him was left vague. I never got an answer.

I did some research and nothing. Years went by Internet grew so I researched more, could not find a hint of Brant Baker. A decade goes by and still no hide nor hair of the man of God that healed many on nation TV and is so many healing rallies and became a main TBN feature for a time. Then 12/07/07 I got an old Shekinah Fellowship out from moth balls and looked for info that may help me find him.

I typed in "Shekinah Fellowship" and there he was big as life. Someone opened up the doors to getting Brant recognized for the servant of God that he was and so finally I got details on Brant baker. I was right he did die of aids. I also found he was connected with Lonnie Frisbee of all things basically put the freak in Jesus freak. I will be doing more research as it appears interesting info is on this guy's history and he was part of an ex-gaymistry that I was in communications with decades ago when I was doing indepth research on ex-gay ministries.

Binny Hinn also was very much into Brant Baker and sort of coppied Brant's and Kathren's healing ministry format. Binny was even kept in the dark about Brant's death by aids until 2005 (Brant died in 1985). TBN and the Christian leadership of the day erased Brant Baker from all records and to find info untill recently was nearly impossible. This sounds of conspiracy theroies and Scfi-Fi movie stuff.

I still have not researched this enough to know for a fact Brant was gay, right now it is one plus one, and at best he with Lonnie tried the ex-gay route. I have not seen enough to know how he got aids except he came to Jesus after a life tipical of the woodstock days. Possibly like many in those days safe was not a priority.

One thing certain is he was a forrunner of the next stage in healing ministries, so far everythng you see is copy cat look alike try to be like ministries. A new style is about to go forth and take the world by storm as it is the final round of healing ministries. Brant may or may not have been gay (will research this part) but he was banned because he had aids. Brant force to be in the closet at least about aids was then in the 80s. This is 2008 coming up. No such boundries. orientation will be wide open with no guessing and God will move mightly in your site.

....Yes... You are right... and so was his younger brother KEVIN... who took over the ministry once Brandt was to ill ... and died... AS DID KEVIN a couple of years later...

(This is second hand information...) but he died in Florida... of AIDS...

From what I understand... Brandt worked at a CLothing Story... thus his many references to "Temptation came thru the open door every day... many times..."... before he left it and started his ministry / bible study...

HE COPIED KATHRYN KUHLMAN... as did B Hinn... (who knew full and well when and how Brandt died.....)

There are rumors that Brabdt liked to dress in drag as KK for his friends... and had her so "down"... if you shut your eyes... you wouldn't know if it was her or him...

He so identified with her larger than life persona... and genuine SPIRIT FILLED example... (She died at 76... contrary to what is written... having lied about her age... and paid for a "revision" of county records in Missouri... Miss Kuhlman was the TRUE miracle... and lived with an enlarged heart from childhood Rheumatic Fever. Doctors told her she would likely only live into her 50"s... thought her FINAL AND GLORIOUS ministry didn't start until she was 48 years old... and the final 10 year push that cemented her at the FOREFRONT and MOTHER of the Charismatic movement...started at age 65!!!!!)... The Holy Spirit lived thru her.... and kept her going long past any natural physical ability!!

After Miss Kuhlman's death FEBRUARY 20, 1976... BRANDT SENT A LIFE-SIZED cardboard cut-out of her to the "KK Foundation " in Pittsburgh... in which they were so astounded / mortified.... they had it destroyed...

(Kathryn Kuhlman was on KJR Sunady nites at 9:00 PM in Seattle... from the late 50's thru the 60's... when the station discontinued religious programming... though not Public Service broadcasts... as evidenced by the SALVATION ARMY PROGRAM / Parody with Lan Roberts and Tom Murphy,,,)

Poor Brandt Baker... reached out for help... with the Hollywood Asssemby of God pastor... confessing his indescretions.... WHO IN TURN outed him to the Crouches..... and thus his ministry went from hero to ZERO immediately... (I think even BB tapes have been destroyed...)

Heard him in his HeyDay... He was for real... and then in the last few years... a broken and sick man in love and thankfulnees to his savior!!!!

I worked in the music ministry of Shekinah fellowship during its Long Beach days. Brant was known to have come out of a gay "past" as had many other guys in the ministry.

Brant certainly channeled KK and was reported to have suddenly become possessed of her mannerisms, etc., after a critical visit to her ministry.

I can confirm "anonymous's" claim about Brad's brother Kevin as well. Kevin was a nice guy and routinely had "temptation" trouble in local gay restroom haunts, etc.

Joe Dallas also came out of Shekinah and knew Brant well - he is now a major "ex-gay" counselor and psychologist who, according to rumors, was heavily influenced by Brant's death to renounce a gay Christian lifestyle and go back to straightdom.

So true, Brant Baker was a man of God with the anointing of God upon his ministering to others. He did know Lonnie Frisbee personally as his friend.

Brant's mother, Joellen, would never speak about Lonnie. If you brought him up in conversation with her, she would go silent. My perception was that she may have felt that Lonnie was somehow responcible for Brant not being able to remain out of the gay life style. Or perhaps she somehow felt that Lonnie had a role in Brant and his brother's Aids demise.

We will never know because she has passed away.

Those who were in the meetings of Shekinah Fellowship have gotten up there in years and are more apt to be ambivelant and reluctant to share their stories. There was a website for a few years that tried to get them to come together and share their stories, but no one hardly came forward.

I did find this social forum where a few of them have shown up.
http://www.quicktopic.com/39/H/LLn3p9VeCH5Sp

Seattle has a very large gay community. It is speculated that Brant ministered in San Diego and Long Beach also because of their large gay populations.

Today Brant would be going to the bible belt to minister because the gays are showing up there in the most unlikely redneck cities. Carolina is another place that Brant would possibly go.

Brant Baker cared about the gays. He understood them and loved them as people that Christ loved. He wanted them to know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

Jesus died for us all. What person can truly know what is in a gay persons heart? What person can truly know the struggles in life a gay person has had to go through? What person can know the emptyness inside, the pain of just wanting to be loved by some one, any one?

Jesus can!

He says "Come unto Me all you who are burdened and heavy laden, and I will give you rest unto your soul.

...and him that cometh to Me I will in no wise cast out.

Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God; Not of works, lest any man should boast.

But without faith it is impossible to please Him.

Come.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth My word, and believeth on Him that sent Me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

Ye must be born again.

Jesus said unto her, I Am the resurrection, and the life; he that believeth in Me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth and believeth in Me shall never die.

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

For God sent not His Son into the world to condem the world: but that the world through Him might be saved.

Neverthe less the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, the Lord knoweth them that are His. And, let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.

For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ: that everyone may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.

So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.

God is not mocked; for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

But God Commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Who His own self bare our sins in His own body on the tree.

If we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanseth us from all sin.

Christ died for our sins.

Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation?

Behold, now is the accepted time: behold, now is the day of salvation.

FOR ALL HAVE SINNED, and come short of the glory of God.

Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

Jesus said,
Behold I stand at the door and knock if any man hear My voice, and open the door, I will come in to him.

My Prayer.

God be merciful to me a sinner! I believe Christ died for me and that His Precious blood will cleanse me from all my sin. By faith I now receive the Lord Jesus Christ into my heart as my Lord and My Savior: trusting Him for the salvation of my soul. Help me Lord to do thy will each day. In Jesus name I pray. Amen

These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God: that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

Therefore being justified by faith we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

My peace I give unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Casting all your care upon him, for He careth for you.

Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

Jesus loves you so much, more then you will ever know. Come to Him.

Brant was gay. He had a relationship with my former brother-in-law, who was one of his 'bodyguards'. When he needed money, he would come to Long Beach and visit Brant, who would give him money to leave.

Wow this is all very interesting. I had the honor and the privilege of attending a Brant Baker Shekinah Fellowship service in Los Angeles in 1976, and was slain in the spirit at the mere approach of the man. I still to this day tell people of the experience and he was definitely for real. It impresses me even more that he was Gay and had such gifts of the spirit.

I attended several services in the late 1970s where Brant was the visiting evangelist at Jerry Bernard's Christian Faith Center in San Diego. During the altar call, Brant was so engulfed with the Holy Spirit that he had to have 2 men hold him up while he went from person to person praying for them. Everyone was slain in the Spirit before he could even touch them, and that included me.

It was well known at that time that Brant was a "former" homosexual. I was also told that he had been engaged to a woman, but the engagement broke off before the wedding took place.

It really bothers me that everyone
refers to Brant as being gay. I too was in the ministry and knew him to be the real mccoy.Wheather he USE to be gay is another matter.
Paul, was a murderer and killed
christians. That is until he met JESUS. So why is every one trying to give a name to someone that can't defend themselves. What sins have you committed before you met JESUS. I have my dark secrets how about you? Or can't you find anything else to gossip about ?

Let me first say that I believe homosexuality is natural and nothing to be ashamed of. It occurs in nature and in every country on Earth. This information is provided not to gossip but to hope for understanding and love in the true spirit of Jesus.

Brant was actively homosexual during his ministry. A member of my extended family had a sexual relationship and was blackmailing him for a period of time. I find it sad that he couldn't be himself.

Really shows the type of person Paul Crouch is by his behavior toward Mr. Baker. As a lesson in karma, note that Paul Crouch has also been accused of being in the closet just like Brant. Seems like everything is forgivable in fundamentalist Christianity except for being Gay. Funny, Jesus never spoke about sexual proclivities but had a lot to say about Pharisees and other hypocrites. (As a catty aside, I've always found Jan Crouch to look like a tired drag queen than a Christian TV host.) I saw Brant back in his heyday and was impressed and moved. Just wish people would get beyond all the homophobia.

My parents used to attend these things. Brant Baker doesn't seem as bad as the people he associated with such as Benny Hinn, Paul Crouch (all accused and most busted with problems with money--and sex--seems to be a requirement of being a Christian Fundamentalist: must steal money and secretly have sex with prostitutes) but any group of people that shames others for being who they are, especially using "the word of God" is an unhealthy and awful group of people.

It is sad that this person couldn't be who he truly was. And it's sad that people are carrying on this "wasn't Brant great, too bad he was gay" thing. Stop being brain washed people! You don't need to prop yourself up with all this religion. Why not just concentrate on being a loving, kind, caring human being. Doing well to others and forget the rest of this B.S. so it stops hurting and killing people. It's ridiculous.

I was saved and slain in the spirit thanks to Brant Baker and his ministry in Long Beach. It was an experience I can never forget. I am now in my 50's and could care less about his sexual proclivities. He was a wonderful spirit filled Christian who brought the Lord to so many. His healing ministry was such a blessing and He is truly missed to this day. I can say for sure that he sits with his friend Jesus and I look forward to meeting them both again.

I went to Shekinah as a teen. Many of came. I did not know or care that Brant was gay. I and others were drawn to him because of his LOVE. I am not longer a "Christain"
but..I believe that Brant had special Gifts. He was a child of God. I would like to find out were he passed. I feel bad he died in this way. In 85 i was caring for a man dieing of aids. It was really the worst thing I had ever seen. I was wondering IF i could put a head stone on his grave. I heard he is buried in a unmaked grave.
How sad, does anyone know were he
is buried, maybe he was cremated?
Would Love to know. Thankx Linda

I attended Shekinah Fellowship at both the "Foursquare Church" and the former Theather down on Ocean Blvd., both in Long Beach, CA. I was very young and never thought or assumed he was gay but that he admired and had been a part of (or) attended many of Kathryn Kuhlman's ministry healing services; as such was his calling/gifting of God. [And, was the case he acted and even had many sayings/gestures the same as her's he patterned his ministry style after - having admired her].

I know that Brant's brother died a few years after him ... it was rumored at the time that they both died of cancer... which led others to say AIDS is a form of cancer and funny they both died of the same thing(?) probably it was actually AIDS since he (Brant) called off his engagement a few years earlier to a very attractive girl and member of the congregation whom he was going with. You didn't shut your eyes and think you were hearing a girl as someone implied; although he and his brother were very personable and smiled a lot!

I am not aware if there was any influence from Lonnie Frisbee, or exact connection with Joe Dallas's -who was a part of the "Shekinah Fellowship" ministry team- and now current ministry related to gays who want to come out of the lifestlye... I'm unable to confirm or deny this.
Also, I Don't know if it was AIDS or not; but if it was, Brant and his brother may just as likely have gotten the AIDS from sharing needles as they were HEAVY DRUG USERS as smoked pot was just their gateway drug - all before being in the ministry.
If you ever had opportunity to have attended a service at "Shekinah Fellowship" in Long Beach, CA., you would have noticed he always wore long sleeve shirts (once in a while suits as he one time worked at a clothing store) and as he related in giving his testimony on more that one occasion the reason he wore long sleeve shirts all the time was so to cover up his track marks left from his days of drug use - B.C. Days.
I still have about 15 to 20 cassette tapes of Rev. Brant Baker as well as a few LP's of the beautiful Lilly Green who use to sing at Shekinah and played apart of the Jesus Movement Music! I am not gay, and as such I'm not trying to defend him; just relating a fuller picture with respect to events related to his life, ministry & death...

Like several others here, I too became a Christian as the result of the Shekinah Fellowship Ministry and Brant Bakers preaching. It was always an inspiring message too. This was back in Feb. of 1973 at the YMCA in Riverside, every Friday night was Shekinah Fellowship night and boy did those services last till the wee hours of the morning in the afterglow services!

Many here seem to be harping on the gay issue...it never was an issue in those days, at least not to me. As a matter of fact, Shekinah was pretty much a mainstream ministry as far as the Jesus Movement was concerned and the musicians of that time were frequently ministering in music on those Friday nights...Love Song, Sweet Comfort, Keith Green, The Way, Mustard Seed Faith, Children of the Day and others who were involved with Calvary Chapel and other ministries shared with Shekinah Fellowship.

I attended for years in Riverside, went to Long Beach at the Foursquare Church, Theatre and The huge Civic Auditorium Meetings where we would go to by bus with the folks from Palm Springs.

As far as Paul Crouch and his group goes, I lost respect for them years ago when they came to do a special service when I was attending Church on the Way in Van Nuys, CA. Each member of his family came in thier own stretch limousine. Just the sight of that more than confirmed the phoniness and lack of integrity and accountability in handling the monies donated by the saints....God's money.

Though the services at Shekinah often seemed grand in the visual, they were genuine in heart and in spirit. For those who want to point at Brant, remember, God uses the foolish things of the earth to bring forth His good and to confound those who consider themselves wise. Just look at who He is using today if you need proof. God's word will be preached and it will not become void - ever.

At one point while Brant had a ministry in Long Beach, both at a local Four Square Church, and Fox Theater as it had been down on Ocean Blvd... during that era. He (Brant) was engaged to a girl, don't recall her name... they broke up... and in the end didn't get married.

This lack of marriage occurring, added to rumors he was gay after his death. Although it was well known at the time of his life that he and his brother Kevin had been hardcore druggies in BC days, not only doing pot but shooting up... this is in Brant's testimony of himself!

Brant, even told why he never wore any shirts but long sleeve shirts to cover up his track marks on his arms! It's a fact that Aids, does come from other things besides a gay lifestyle.

This fact, of his life gets little to no mention; that he had done, and had a drug lifestyle!

Besides this, it's not only people who are gay that get aids... As a friend of a relative of mine, had a daughter that worked truck drives and contracted aids... While I've not seen anything that factually showed he died from aids... I've heard he died of cancer.

I'm just saying... I don't know for certain what was the case! I guess there is room for conjecture. (Just sharing some facts about Brant... and that he did preach Jesus, the sinful nature of man, and a need for salvation).

I first heard of Brant Baker through a relative, and out of curiosity went to a Shekinah Fellowship meeting once, somewhere in Los Angeles, then a second time when he was invited to minister at an Assembly of God church in Pico Rivera. That was approximately 1980. I also met a couple that used to be word of knowledge workers in his ministry, and they later married and are now pastoring a church. When they found out that Brant was dieing of aids, they went to visit him in the hospital. According to them he had backslid into homosexuality, but had repented on his deathbed. When I went to see Brant on those two earlier occasions, I didn't know about his background nor of the struggles he apparently had with temptations with homosexuality. I was told about it years later. I was not a christian yet when I visited BC's ministry; I became a Christian soon after that. But looking back, and knowing what I know now, I'm very glad that I had no further exposure to that ministry. I don't have any first hand experience with Brant or his ministry to judge his character or integrity one way or the other, but if he did succumb to temptation to engage in homosexual practices, then he disqualified himself from ministry, period. Yes God can forgive him if he was truly repentant, but he forfeited his ministry. I've come a long way in my christianity and have studied the Bible to know God and the truth, and have learned to discern in order to live a life pleasing to God, and all I can say is that looking back, and knowing what I know now, I'm grateful that I only had minimal exposure to that ministry.

When I was a young man in my twenties I atttended several Shekinah Fellowship services in Long Beach. I accepted the Lord at those services. I can still remember as if were yesterday. I have never felt the presence of God as strong as I did at Shekinah Fellowship. Brant's services were so alive and real. Brant was the real deal. My spirit bares witness to the marvelous things that transpired at those rallys. The Healing and Salvation that occured during the services was genuine, spirit filled and beautiful. Young Hippies and Surfers were coming to the Lord in great numbers. The young people identified with Brant, as they did with Chuck Smith. It is not mine, nor should it be Paul Crouch's right to Judge Brant. We all have fell short of the glory of God. Where was the Love and compassion that Christians should have for one another??
I believe the Lord will use anyone who believes on his name and preaches his word. The Lord used Brant in a mighty way. I think PTL was very wrong for what they did to Brant, and I believe God will deal wwith them for those actions. It is a pretty sad situation that someone like Paul Crouch(A Leader) didn't have the love in his heart to understand what Brant was going through. To condemn him the way PTL did is unforgiveable. It is also a shame the way that his people fell away, instead of strengthening him with their Love and understanding.
When I attended Life Bible College the PTL Club was referred to as "The Praise the Dollar Club by the students and even some of the Faculty. They would be praising the Lord for all the money that came in wiih more joy than of the souls that were saved. Maybe Paul and Jan were worried about losing contributions instead of having compassion for their brother in the Lord.
I guess that I have rambled on enough. All I can say is that I believe that Brant did some beautiful work in the name of Jesus, and now he is with the Lord that he loved so much. God bless Brant and Shekinah Fellowship.
I have never found another worship service that even compared to Shekinah. I miss it so much

this is all so interesting to me as I was one who experienced a profound impact from the Jesus Movement during those days.I wish I somehow had had the courage to deal with my own homosexual feelings back then. I was around the Calvary Chapel people, baptised at Melodyland, played Christian Rock with one of the founders later of Daniel Amos (Terry Taylor) etc. etc. But I fell away in frustration over not being able to deal with being homosexual, although I never acted on my feelings until a few years later.

I knew Brant years and years ago through Calvary Chapel (I think it was C.C.), worked for him at his clothing store in Costa Mesa for a time, and I remember folding jeans for the tables! I just LOVED that guy, and he was so sincere about his love for Jesus. A true sweetheart. A little bit "different", but I never knew why. His mother was a very sweet lady, too. (She called him "Branty". It was cute.) I did not know he was gay and I never knew Lonnie was gay, back then, since I was immature and focused on the church, not the pastors so much. I did not know Brant had died until reading these semi-recent posts and I'm sad to hear this. Very sad, and then for his brother Kevin to die AND his Mom later on. I'm glad Brant was in my life for a time. I have lovely memories of him and his enthusiasm and commitment to God. I have hope that in the end he made his peace with God, asked for forgiveness, and is now enjoying his new life with Him. It's just so disappointing that he died as he did, just like Lonnie did, too. A very sweet man, however. Very nice.

The presence of Jesus Christ was very real at every Shekinah Fellowship service. Brant Baker was an anointed messenger/servant of our Lord. He had and has a strong message to the Church of Christ. Satan has done everything he can do to destroy the message. He did everything he could to destroy the ministry of Shekinah Fellowship, and so tarnish the name of Brant Baker that it's difficult to find any of his sermons any where. I was thrilled to find some on the internet. I was blessed to have served the Lord along side hundreds of other young Christians for four years. They were the best four years of my life. Let's all step back from the controversy and remember the message. Christ's Church needs to hear it now more than ever.

"I believe in miracles" is what Kathryn Kuhlman would say as she glided across the stage. I was at her service once and at Brant Baker's service once . He was wearing a light blue long sleeve shirt and pants. He pointed to me and my male friend sitting in the audience to come up on the stage with him. We were both born again and had been filled with the HOLY SPIRIT. He told us that GOD had called us and that GOD was going to use us. That experience has been weighing on me for several months now and I wanted to find out more about Brant. I have, since reading this blog. I always felt he was gay and was being used by GOD.It didn't matter to me what he had done or was doing in his personal life, IT was GOD I was feeling on that stage with Brant. During that time I was going to L.I.F.E. Bible College, Graduated and was ordained a Four Square minister, 1979. Here it is 2013 and Brant is still inspiring me. GOD has had me on the "back side of the desert" for many years and I still am waiting on GOD for his direction. HE has performed many miracles in my life and I can say "I believe in miracles". I have much to say about the miracles of GOD in me. 1 419 721 3899.

Amen, I am also continually bless by his ministry. He is an example to gay Christians. It is amazing what God did through Brant way way back in those such homophobic days. God is not delaying his works in gays since Brant. Over all gay Christian are reserved for major end time ministries. God works hard at keeping us till that day with enough to keep us seeking that day he has for us as a whole. That is the main reason for only minor works by gay Christians these past decades. God's plan is yet to be fulfilled for major ministries that will shake the world.
